Jan Hein Cornel was appointed as Special Professor of Inflammation in Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease at Radboudumc on April 1, 2020. This chair was made possible through a collaboration between Radboudumc, the WCN association, and the Northwest Hospital Group. Prof. Jan Hein Cornel specializes in the mechanisms of action and new clinical anti-inflammatory treatment options for both chronic and acute heart problems resulting from atherosclerosis. Under the theme “Inflammation of the Vascular Wall,” he will establish a strategic partnership between Radboudumc and the WCN association. The research focuses on the development and progression of inflammation in the vascular wall and the implications for treatment.

Jan Hein Cornel (Harlingen, 1960) has been working as a cardiologist at the Northwest Hospital Group (NWZ) in Alkmaar and Den Helder since 1995. In addition, he served as cardiology training supervisor there from 2012 until his appointment as professor. He is a member and former chair of the WCN. Within Radboudumc, his expertise as a clinical trialist in large international studies is a valuable addition to existing research lines. With the support of WCN and Northwest, Cornel is working on translating academic findings, through clinical trials, into everyday practice in the consultation room.
